Dianic Witchcraft

Please note: This is not the only form Dianic Wicca takes, some do recognize the God, but the Goddess is supreme.

Sometimes called Feminist Dianic Witchcraft, focus exclusively on the Goddess and consists of women-only covens and groups. These tend to be loosely structured and non-hierarchical, using consensus-decision-making and simple, creative, experimental ritual. They are politically feminist groups, usually very supportive, personal and emotionally intimate. There is a strong lesbian presence in the movement, though most covens are open to women of all orientations. (according to one web author) Wicca itself is a new religion, drawing strongly on the practices of Ceremonial Magic. While there are claims that Wicca goes back into the mists of prehistory, honest examination of the practices and history of the Wicca will make it clear that Wicca is new. (Actually, the word "Wicca" itself is recently coined, at least in its present usage. The OE "wicca" was pronounced "witch-ah" and meant male magician. The new word "Wicca" is pronounced "wick-uh", capitalized as a religion, and means a religion, not a person.) However, Wicca has developed in many directions and should not be seen as a unified whole, even though it is fairly new. Rituals and beliefs vary widely among Witches.

Unlike most of the neopagan religions, Wicca is an initiatory religion, that is, people who choose to practice Wicca believe that the commitment to this path set changes in motion in their lives. Like everything else in neopaganism and the Craft, the term Dianic is one that has several meanings. A majority of those who call themselves Dianic are women that choose not to work with male energy in their ritual, magic, or universe. They feel that they need spiritual and psychic space filled with only women's energy. Some Dianics are feminist Witches, both lesbian and heterosexual, who often come to the Craft through feminism. Although these women may be involved with men in one way or another, they agree that religion has overemphasized the male for the last several thousand years, and therefore want to share their women's energy in women's circles. They may or may not also be involved with the mainstream pagan community, and they may or may not participate in magic and ritual with men.

The most visible groups of Dianics are those who are lesbian Dianics. They are generally not interested in revering any sort of male deity or in working with men in circle. They choose to limit their dependence on and acceptance of the male-defined world as much as possible, and they do so not to exclude men but rather to celebrate women and the feminine. For that reason many of them do not interact much with the "mainstream" pagan community.

Traditional vs Dianic Wiccan Wheels of the Year

by Suzanna* and used with permission

Samhain

Many Wiccans start their year with Samhain (Oct. 31st). During Samhain, Wiccans revere their friends and loved ones who have past on to the other life. Because reincarnation is a general belief among Wiccans, this is not a somber occasion, but a quiet recognition of the inevitable outcome of this life. Many Wiccans mark this night as the symbolic death of the God. Samhain is linked with the coming of winter and ancient hunting rituals.

Dianic: A time to honor the Old Ones; the Ancestors. The veil between the worlds is at it's thinnest. Honoring and remembering our own Loved ones who have passed into the OtherWorld. The last harvest; The Great Goddess/Earth Mother starts her decent into the 'quiet world.' A world of rest, dreams and hibernation. A time and place for the gathering of strength for the renewal, and the rebirth of Her vitality.

Yule

The exact dates of Yule vary from year to year (usually around the 21st of December). Yule takes place during the Winter Solstice, and celebrates the date of the rebirth of the God (symbolically seen as the Sun). The Winter Solstice marks the depth of winter, from this day onward the days grow longer until midsummer.

Dianic: Yule, Winter Solstice; The Earth Mother slips into Her dreams and hibernation. The Earth that is in winter-rests. The dark half of the year. Longest night of the year. With the following dawn, comes the gradual increase of Light.

Imbolc

Imbolc is celebrated February 1st or 2nd. This is a festival of purification and celebration for the renewing fertility of the Earth. This is the time to celebrate the recovery of the Goddess from giving birth to the God.

Dianic: The same, Except the Goddess is recovering from Her hibernation. It's the first stirrings of the Goddess as she awakens from Her sleep. The Earth begins to stir, soften and thaw. The first shoots of vegetation push forth. We have turned towards the light.

Ostara

Celebrated around March 21st. The Spring Solstice marks the first day of true spring. Ostara is a time of awakening within the Earth (symbolically the Goddess), as the Sun gives increased warmth and power.

Dianic: The same. However, while some believe the Sun is a 'God' and He gives this power to the Goddess, to strengthen Her… Dianics would see it otherwise. Personally, I see it as the Goddess turning towards the Sun, (The tilt in the world's axis) to warm Herself, and thaw the Earth that has been cold. The Sun is not represented as a male God-figure to me. The Sun, like All the stars and planets and the universe was born of the Goddess; The Great Goddess, the Creatress.

Beltane / Beltaine

April 30th or May 1st

marks the festival in which the young God ventures into manhood. He and the Goddess join and produce the bounty of nature.

Dianic: Beltaine; To rejoice the Goddess' full awakening and ascension into the Spring/Light half of the year. All is rejuvenated. All is reborn of the Goddess. (Our part of) the world is awake; seeds have germinated, animals give birth, trees bloom in preparation for their fruit. The Earth's fertility at it's peak. We are building towards the harvests.

Midsummer / Summer Solstice

Celebrated around June 21st. At this time, natures powers (created by the union of the Sun and the Earth) are at their peak. This is a time to gather to celebrate and to practice magic. Bonfires are lit to honor the Sun.

Dianic: The same; except for the 'union of the Sun (male God) and the Earth (Goddess)'. Longest day of the year. We begin the turn towards the waning half of the year-- the dark half. With the next dawn, each day will grow shorter towards the perfect balance (once again) of Mabon.

Lughnasadh / Lammas

August 1st marks the beginning of harvest, and the time of this festival of Thanks to the God. As the first grains and fruits are cut, the God weakens.

(have you noticed by now, how "The God" is getting most of the credit, and seems to be dominant almost throughout the entire year? Almost like the Goddess only exists as a 'vessel' for His seed and vitality and strength. And as if Her primary function IS to birth the God… A little submissive, eh?)

Dianic: The first Harvest. The Grains and Fruit harvest. We begin to celebrate the Bounty of the Goddess. We thank Her for this first harvest and ask Her blessings upon the remaining harvests.

Mabon / Autumnal Equinox

Celebrated around September 21st. This is the second harvest. As the last fruits are gathered to feed the people, the God prepared to leave His life behind Him. Samhain follows Mabon, and the cycle begins again.

Dianic: Same as above; except the Goddess is preparing to 'rest'… to venture into the 'quiet time' of the year. Mabon/Equinox another perfect balance of light and dark, before the nights grow longer. There is one last harvest (Samhain) before She descends into the 'Quiet world' for rest and rejuvenation, and the Wheel turns again.

There is also balance to be noticed in the fact that the whole Earth does not go through the same changes/seasons at the same time. While half the world is in Light, the other is in Dark. While half the world is in Summer, half is in Winter. While the Goddess rests in one half, She is creating and active in the other. Balance. Wheel within Wheel. Circle within Circle.
